Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir

Melbourne hottest community gospel choir

MMGC is a choir with soul!  We sing a wide range of gospel and soul music, from early spirituals like Steal Away, the golden era of the gospel quartets, the soul gospel sounds of 60‘s and 70‘s, Aretha Franklin’s classic songs, Mavis Staples, Bob Dylan and contemporary gospel giants such as Kirk Franklin.

Phil Heuzenroeder, MMGC’s Music Director

“I am hugely passionate about singing together, and for me, gospel music is the most powerful and unifying music to sing.  I love its uplifting power and its passion as the music expresses the history of struggle of African and African-American people.

I’m fascinated by Gospel music’s long history and evolution as a musical culture and its central place in worship and community.  I strive for MMGC to interpret its meaning in a secular community environment and discover how it speaks to our daily lives here in Australia.”

Gospel Songs Of Bob Dylan

In 2011, MMGC presented our Gospel Songs Of Bob Dylan show to 3 sold out shows in Nov 2011, and then to 5,000 people on the Port Fairy Folk Festival main stage.  We took Dylan’s brilliant songs from his “Christian conversion” period Slow Train and Saved albums and interpreted them for our huge massed choir sound.

Aretha - Gospel and Soul

MMGC took Aretha’s classic gospel songs and her iconic soul songs and added 80 voices to them!  We presented our 3 spectacular, sold-out shows at Thornbury Theatre in 2013.

The Staple Singers

In 2017, MMGC took audiences through the story of one of Gospel music’s most iconic families, The Staple Singers. From early Gospel songs through to massive commercial hits, The Staple Singers produced amazing music with an unerring spirit and commitment to social justice.
